Penny Marshall the woman who directed Big, Riding in Cars with Boys and the brilliant A League of Their Own is directing a new film based on the life of Effa Manley the first woman to be inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame.
Effa co-owned the Newark Eagles baseball franchise, a professional all black baseball league along side her husband. She was very much involved in the day to day running of the league as she was their business manager. She was also heavily involved in the civial rights movement, organising various protests and events. In essence a life worth not only talking about but celebrating too.
A league of Their Own is still a wonderful film, if you’ve never seen it or it’s been years since you last saw it, do yourself a favour and watch it, you won’t regret it. (Riding in Cars with Boys is excellent too!) Marshall is the perfect choice for this film centered around a business women in baseball . I already can’t wait to see it!
The Effa Manley story is part of a two picture deal Marshall has signed with Studioplex City, so we’ll be seeing a lot of Marshall around in the next couple of years, which suits me just fine.
