The Best Foreign Films You Might have Missed

When it comes to foreign cinema there are plenty of films that have proved popular amongst mainstream audiences, especially horror fans. We increasing turn to other countries to get our scares.
Ring, I Saw the Devil, Pan’s Labyrinth, Time Crimes, Old Boy, The Host, The Orphanage, Battle Royal, Switchblade Romance these are all well known films
but there are plenty of excellent foreign language films that have slipped under the radar. So, here’s my list of some of the best!

The Uninvited Guest –  (El Habitante Incierto)
A 2004 Spanish mystery thriller.

Architect Felix lives in a large house on his own since his wife left him. One night, a stranger knocks at his door and aks to his phone. Felix allows him to do so, leaves the room for a few minutes, and then discovers the man is nowhere to be seen. Is he still in the house?

Julia’s Eyes – (Los ojos de Julia)
2010 Spanish horror.

Julia is a woman suspicious of his sister’s apparent suicide and she starts investigating. Julia and her sister both suffer from a degenerative eye disease and the stress of trying to find out the truth about her sister’s death  is casuing her causing her eyes to deteriorate faster. Can she find out the truth before she becomes totally blind?

Thirst
2009 South Korean horror film.

Sang-hyun is a Catholic priest who volunteers to participate in an experiment to find a vaccine for a deadly virus. The experiment fail and Sang-hyun is infected with the seemingly fatal disease but he makes a complete and rapid recovery after receiving a blood transfusion.
Director Park Chan-wook has said “This film was originally called ‘The Bat’ to convey a sense of horror. After all, it is about vampires. But it is also more than that. It is about passion and a love triangle. I feel that it is unique because it is not just a thriller, and not merely a horror film, but an illicit love story as well.”

The Hidden Face – (La cara oculta)
2011 Colombian thriller.

A Spanish orchestra conductor deals with the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend.

Marshland – La isla mínima
2014 Spanish Thriller

Two homicide detectives who appear to be poles apart must settle their differences and bring a serial killer to justice before more young women lose their lives.

The Hunt – (Jagten)
2012 Danish drama

A lie shatters a teacher’s life and has serious consequences.

The Secret in their Eyes – (El secreto de sus ojos)
2009 crime thriller

A retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior – both of which still haunt him decades later.

The Body – (El cuerpo)
2012 Spanish thriller

A detective searches for the body of a femme fatale which has gone missing from a morgue.
